15th MARCH - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2024 / உலக நுகர்வோர் உரிமைகள் தினம் 2024: ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் மார்ச் 15ஆம் தேதி உலக நுகர்வோர் உரிமைகள் தினமாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. உலக நுகர்வோர் உரிமைகள் தினம் ஜனாதிபதி ஜான் எஃப் கென்னடியால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டது, அவர் மார்ச் 15, 1962 அன்று அமெரிக்க காங்கிரஸுக்கு ஒரு சிறப்பு செய்தியை அனுப்பினார்,
அதில் அவர் முறையாக நுகர்வோர் உரிமைகள் பிரச்சினையை உரையாற்றினார். அவ்வாறு செய்த முதல் உலகத் தலைவர் அவர்தான்.

15th MARCH - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2024: Every year 15th March is celebrated as the World Consumer Rights Day. World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by President John F Kennedy, who sent a special message to the US Congress on 15th March 1962, in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights.
He was the first world leader to do so. The consumer movement first marked that date in 1983 and now uses the day every year to mobilise action on important issues and campaigns.
Objective
15th MARCH - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2024: World Consumer Rights Day is an annual international event that signifies celebration and solidarity in the international consumer movement, demanding that, consumer rights are to be respected and protected.
The event also gives a chance to protest against the market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.
Significance
15th MARCH - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2024: Since the time the world started observing World Consumer Rights Day, the main aim was to strengthen the rights of consumers. As consumers, we need to be aware of our rights and act consciously keeping the same in mind.
Participants observe the day by pledging support for all consumers' fundamental rights, requesting that these rights be acknowledged and protected, and opposing market abuses and social injustices that undermine those rights.

15th MARCH - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2024: World Consumer Rights Day 2024 Theme is “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.” As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it’s crucial that AI systems are developed and used ethically, with respect for consumer rights at the forefront.
This theme emphasizes the need for AI to be transparent, accountable, and inclusive, ensuring that consumer protection keeps pace with technological advancements.

15th MARCH - WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2024: This year 2023, the theme of world consumer rights day is “Clean Energy Transitions”.
There are some rights of consumers
- Right to Safety - To be protected against the marketing of goods and services, which are hazardous to life and property. The purchased goods and services availed of should not only meet their immediate needs but also fulfil long term interests.
- Right to be Informed - Right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices.
- Right to Choose - To be assured, wherever possible of access to a variety of goods and services at a competitive price. In the case of monopolies, it means the right to be assured of satisfactory quality and service at a fair price.
- Right to be Heard - Meaning that consumers’ interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums. It also includes the right to be represented in various forums formed to consider the consumer’s welfare.
- Right to Seek redressal - To seek redressal against unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers. It also includes the right to fair settlement of the genuine grievances of the consumer.
- Right to Consumer Education - To acquire the knowledge and skill to be an informed consumer throughout life. Ignorance of consumers, particularly of rural consumers, is the main cause behind their exploitation.
- Right to satisfaction of basic needs - To have access to basic, essential goods and services: adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, public utilities, water and sanitation.
- Right to a healthy environment - To live and work in an environment that is non-threatening to the well-being of present and future generations.
