M-sand has been increasingly used in construction as an alternative to river sand in recent times. To prevent the sale of substandard M-Sand, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a new policy to regulate its production, quality, price etc.
Minister Duraimurugan received the announcement from Chief Minister Stalin at the Chennai Secretariat. Chief Secretary Thivanpu, Industries Secretary Krishnan, Geology and Mines Commissioner Jayakanthan participated. This policy has come into force since yesterday.
The government has decided to increase the production of M-sand or Aravai sand as an alternative to river sand for construction activities and infrastructure development.
M-sand or crushed sand is prepared from unquarried stones and small granites.
Thus, the amount of waste generated in the quarries is reduced. The objective of the M-Sand policy is to create a state where there is no quarry waste.
A cost-effective, quality construction material is available to the general public as compared to river sand.
Highlights
The sector is divided into two categories, those having M-Sand manufacturing plants with quarry lease license and those operating only M-Sand plant without quarry lease license.
A single window system facility will be established in Geology and Mining Department to register M-Sand, Aravai Sand Mills.
In this case, M-Sand production companies will not be given separate mining license.
Simplification of procedure for approval of M-Sand plant; Details such as classification of raw materials required by factories that rely solely on stone quarries are included in the new policy.
It has been said that M-Sand quarry workers will be included as members of the Construction Workers Welfare Board and will be provided with the same benefits.
