Five countries -- India, Pakistan, Nigeria, China and Ethiopia -- accounted for half of all preterm births in 2020, according to a new report released Tuesday by United Nations agencies and partners.
Together they account for 45 percent of preterm births worldwide. It presents a high mortality risk. It also signifies a 'quiet emergency' for the lives and health of children.
A total of 13.4 million babies are estimated to have been born preterm in 2020. About one million of these children die from complications. Also, in 2020, Bangladesh had the highest preterm birth rate.
It is followed by Malawi and Pakistan. India and South Africa are estimated at 13 percent each. India tops the list with 30.16 lakh children, followed by Pakistan with 9.14 lakh, Nigeria with 7.74 lakh and China with 7.52 lakh. It is clear from this study that the infrastructure for newborn care needs to be more comprehensive and up to the shop floor.
A common complaint is lack of access to health care in rural areas. But initiatives such as specialized neonatal care units, improved delivery rooms and efficient deliveries have helped save many premature babies.
But, they have not yet grown. Regarding the regional distribution of preterm births in India, a report published in PloS-Global Public Health on June 28 last year stated that West Bengal accounted for 16 percent, Tamil Nadu 14 percent and Gujarat 9 percent. The global preterm birth rate was 9.9 percent in 2020. It was 9.8 percent in 2010.
