WORLD HIPPOPOTAMUS DAY 2024 - 15TH FEBRUARY: World Hippopotamus Day, popularly known as World Hippo Day, is observed annually on February 15. The day is dedicated to the hippopotamus, one of the largest animals, which is reportedly declining in population. 

World Hippopotamus Day aims to raise awareness about these animals and the threats they are facing due to continuous poaching and hunting for both their meat and ivory teeth. 

It also aims to highlight the importance and value of these mud-loving mammals, in the hope that they will be around for many more years to come. This special day provides a global platform for people to come together and take action to save these species from extinction.

History

WORLD HIPPOPOTAMUS DAY 2024 - 15TH FEBRUARY: Hippos are semiaquatic mammals that are native to sub-Saharan Africa and are mainly found in rivers and mangrove swamps. 

Hippopotamus is a Latin word derived from the Greek roots ‘hippos’ means horse and ‘potamos’ stands for the river, which together mean ‘river horse.’ Though they are considered river horses because they spent most of their time in the water, there is nothing horse-like about these animals. Their closest living relatives are whales, dolphins, and pigs.

Naturalists classified hippos from pigs based on molar patterns until 1909. According to records, the recent theory of the origins of Hippopotamidae reveals that hippos and whales shared a common semiaquatic ancestor Ruminantia, that branched off from other artiodactyls around 60 million years ago.

Significance

WORLD HIPPOPOTAMUS DAY 2024 - 15TH FEBRUARY: Hippos are facing the threat of extinction due to an increase in hunting and poaching for the economic benefit of humans. In 2006, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed hippos as a ‘vulnerable species’.
